UPWARD YOUTH CHOIR is a seasonal choir for students to learn the fundamentals of singing, harmonizing and performing with friends old and new in a safe and distinctly Christian environment. The fall season culminates in a concert for Veteran’s Day to honor those who serve in our armed forces. Our concert will include a variety of patriotic music, classic and sacred songs, hymns, folk songs and spirituals. It is designed to be an enjoyable, yet reverent and meaningful concert. While we honor our veterans, we first seek to honor God in our singing and purpose. Devotions at each rehearsal point students to truths in God’s word to help them grow.
Upward Choir is for students in 1st-12th Grade.
AUDITIONS for new students will be held Tuesday, August 11 from 4:30 – 7:30 pm in the Bethel Church Choir Room. The goal of auditions is for the director to get to know each student and their voice for proper placement. All students are included in choir. Primary students should come prepared to sing verse 1 of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” Intermediate level students should know both verse 1 of “My Country ‘Tis of ‘Thee” and “America the Beautiful.” Words and music are provided so the selections do not need to be memorized. While it is helpful for students to sing alone, it is not required. They can also sing with a sibling, friend or the director.
The link to sign-up for auditions will be sent once you register. If you are a returning student, you do not need to audition. If a student’s voice has changed, an audition would be helpful. One or two students may audition per 10 minute slot. They can be family members or friends.
REHEARSALS will begin Tuesday, August 18 and continue through Tuesday, November 3.
DRESS REHEARSAL is Monday November 9 and the CONCERT is Tuesday November 10.
The PRIMARY CHOIR will rehearse from 4:45-5:45 pm on Tuesdays and will include students who benefit from a shorter rehearsal and more rote teaching. Generally, students are in grades 1 through 4.
The INTERMEDIATE CHOIR will rehearse from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Tuesdays. This choir is designed for students who are ready for a longer rehearsal and are learning to read music and sing parts. Sectionals and a short break will be scheduled during the rehearsal.
Parent input is welcome for placement. All students will be included in a choir. Most students in the intermediate choir are 4th or 5th grade through 12th grade.
The cost to participate is $119 which includes sheet music, a folder, t-shirt and choir robe for the concert. Students will keep the t-shirt, but folders, music and robes will be turned in after the concert.

Mindy Heinsch is the wife of Upward Sports Director, Glenn Heinsch. She has degrees in Vocal Music Education and Educational Leadership. Mindy has taught choral and classroom music to grades K-8 in public and private schools. In addition, she has taught private voice lessons for over 20 years and is a member of the Voice Care Network. Mindy has been active in music ministry in numerous churches over the years both in worship and children’s ministry.
